What's behind the name?
The word "work' as found in 2 Corinthians 4:12, "So death is at work in us, but life is at work in you", (ESV) is the English word for "energeo" in Greek. It is a Verb meaning: to work, be at work, to do. HELPS Word-studies explains it this way, "properly, energize, working in a situation which brings it from one stage (point) to the next, like an electrical current energizing a wire, bringing it to a shining light bulb." Simply put, engaged in work.
inNERV8 then is when the Believer is energized by the power of the Holy Spirit to supply nerves to, to stimulate, to supply with energy, to put nerves into something, or, our favorite... supply an organ or other body part with nerves.
The Apostle Paul writes, "If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." Romans 8:10-11
The Holy Spirit empowers Believers to obey Jesus' words of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) like regenerative nerves supply feeling to a numb limb.
It is similar to John Newton's,
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see."
What's a disciple? Am I a disciple? How do I disciple someone else?
From HELPS Word-study... "mathētḗs (from math-, the "mental effort needed to think something through") – properly, a learner; a disciple, a follower of Christ who learns the doctrines of Scripture and the lifestyle they require; someone catechized with proper instruction from the Bible with its necessary follow-through (life-applications)."
If a Believer is a disciple and is commanded to disciple others what are some simple ways to obey? A simple lifestyle of discipleship can be found in Deuteronomy 6: 6-7, "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." When you have opportunity ask your family, or others, questions such as, What was a high point in your day today? What was a low point? What was a mistake you made today? Where did you see Jesus today? This is how you develop a relationship giving opportunity to speak truth into someone's life.
How to disciple and being a disciple are connected. Being a disciple is, helping someone to progressively learn the Word of God to become a matured, growing disciple (literally, "a learner," a true Christ-follower); to train (develop) in the truths of Scripture and the lifestyle required, i.e. helping a believer learn to be a disciple of Christ in belief and practice.
